Other Critical Concerns

Although there are many other items concerning personal finance that we could and probably should address- there are at least five suggestions that stand out as pre-eminent that deserve at least a mention in passing here.

  1. COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR PARENTS OR SIGNIFICANT OTHER
Where possible, communicate, communicate, communicate! Resist the urge to be "absolutely independent" and remember that those that care most about you may have more experience than you do. Their experience as well as the experience of others around you may help you avoid making the "BIG MISTAKES" but only if you are coachable and observant!
  2. REMEMBER- BEHAVIOR IN PERSONAL FINANCE IS KING
It is true! Though you may get all the technicalities right on paper, unless you choose to align your behavior with your financial goals and objectives they- those on paper- will not likely come to pass. When it is all said and done, success in personal finance is ALL ABOUT BEHAVIOR!
  3. GET HELP FROM THIS CENTER OR OTHERWISE NOW
It cannot be overemphasized that preventative medicine is always better than amputation. Those are stark terms but convey the point that if you are struggling or feel you may be on the verge of a financial struggle or plain don't know where you are financially, you should schedule an appointment immediately!
  4. ENJOY THE RIDE
You'll make much more sense out of the process if you liken the process to a "journey" and not a "destination". Think of it in terms of working with your primary care physician. Your health requires constant vigilance and continual follow-up (check-ups), right? Likewise, so does your financial planning. As circumstances change, so must your plan (in most cases). There is really no way around this!
  5. DON'T OVERLOOK THE DETAILS
Remember, several things traditionally thought of as being out of the context of student life may apply to you. Examples may include:

    Naming Guardians for Minor Children

    Executing Appropriate Power(s) of Attorney

    Executing Appropriate Medical Directives
